Forecasting a low IFR event several days in advance

Added on: September 15, 2011         Duration: 7 minutes

It’s the middle the week and you are planning to fly from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday morning. Given that it’s the last weekend of summer, you are not all that worried about structural icing keeping you grounded. Even though the weather is outstanding right now, you are a bit concerned about the potential for a widespread low IFR event that is beginning to take shape along and east of the Appalachian Mountains for the coming weekend. In this workshop, we’ll examine extended forecast guidance that will describe the potential for a cold-air damming event leading to low ceilings and marginal visibilities from central Maryland to as far south as southern Georgia.
